Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) Diorama Representation of Russell's Famous Postcard 12" x 12.5" x 7.25" overall, mixed media in glass case From card on back of diorama - "Russell, in 1886, was in the employ of Stadler and Kaufman, large cattlemen. He had thousands of head of their cattle in his charge. During the winter of 1886 occurred one of the most severe snowstorms in Montana's history. cattle and sheep died literally by thousands. Stadler and Kaufman, becoming alarmed, wrote Russell as to the condition of the cattle in his charge. He did not write but with his brush drew a picture which told the whole story. The coyotes waited out the last victim of the storm. The picture became famous. It is the most famous of all of Russell's works." The picture was called "Waiting for the Chinook", or "The Last of Five Thousand." $3,000-5,000 Provenance: The old Mint Saloon Auction, Great Falls, MT; Stella and Roy Ostrand, Lolo, MT; Western Artifacts and Indian Auction, Hawk Auction Barn, Stephensville, MT; Dorothy Fail (1983); Present Owner.
