Navajo Rug
8'6" x 5'6". An incredible, very large Germantown floor rug in a blanket weight or hanging tapestry. The bright, expansive red field was expertly filled with bold black water bugs, which have salt and pepper colored Germantown middles. Surrounding the outer perimeter of the field are wonderful finely serrated concentric diamonds. Salt and Pepper Germantown was used in the 1880s and 1890s and is rather rare. A bold Greek-key border frames the weaving very nicely. The wools are all 4-ply Germantown. Germantown yarns were expensive at this time so more than likely it was the trader who supplied it only to his best weavers. Circa 1890.
