P.O.W. A. Buhrke (active c. 1945) Native Portrait 11.25" x 8" watercolor on paper Signed "P.O.W. A. Buhrke '45" lower right $800-1,200 Completed near the close of WWII by a German prisoner of war held in the American West—likely at Camp Douglas, WY, a site known for its murals and Western-themed artwork—this sensitive watercolor reflects a fascination with Native subjects. The strong modeling and bright color palette closely resemble the portrait style of Winold Reiss, whose widely circulated illustrations of Plains Indians appeared in 1930s–40s magazines and calendars made available in POW camps.
